What curriculum will be offered at John Paul II?
The school's curriculum will follow the standard curriculum for the
Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. The curriculum guides are available online
at archkckcs.org. Core subjects include
religion, language arts, math, science and social studies. In addition, all
grades will be taught art, music, physical education, computer technology and
Spanish.
What technology is available at John Paul II?
Students will have access to the latest technology. A computer lab with 25
computers, an LCD projector and the latest software is available for students'
use. In addition, multiple computers will be in each classroom and the media
center. The entire building is networked providing internet access from every
computer. The use of technology will be integrated into each curricular area.
Will there be a learning center at John Paul II?
There will be a full time learning center teacher at John Paul II that will
be divided as needed for grade levels and enhancement and enrichment needs. The
learning center will provide extra support for those students with special needs
to be successful academically.
Will John Paul II offer a haIf-day or full-day kindergarten?
A full-day kindergarten is offered at the school. Studies have shown that a
full-day kindergarten gives students a richer academic experience and better
prepares them for future years.
Will a preschool be offered at John Paul II?
A Montessori preschool will be offered at the school's 71st and Metcalf
location. The Montessori program recognizes that each child learns differently
and at their own pace. This approach develops self-discipline by allowing
children a large measure of independence. The teachers introduce new concepts
and carefully observe the progress of each child, keeping detailed records of
the activities mastered and the child's development. Children who participate in
the program learn their ABC's and to recognize those letters in words. They
learn counting and various other number and math concepts. They also learn to
cooperate, to manage themselves and their time, to use materials properly, and
to respect others. All of these accomplishments are excellent preparation for
kindergarten.
Will there be a science lab?
Yes, there will be a room that is designated as the science lab.
Will there be mentoring between the grade levels?
Students in the younger grades will be paired with students in older grades.
This interaction between grades will provide the older students with an
opportunity to practice their leadership skills while younger students will
experience a more comfortable transition to the school environment.
What extra curricular activities will be offered?
John Paul II will offer CYO basketball, volleyball and track, Battle of the
Books reading contest (4th-6th), Mathletics competition with other schools
(4th-7th), Science Olympiad, as well as other programs.
What activities does PTO offer?
PTO has many activities. Some of these include room parents, balloon launch,
trunk-or-treating, teacher appreciation luncheons, skating parties, bowling
parties, spirit wear and bunko just to name a few.
How will the priests interact with the school?
It is our hope that both parish priests will be visible and involve
themselves with the students and staff as much as their duties allow.
Will summer childcare be available?
Yes, summer childcare will be available.
Are decisions being made about short and long term goals for the school?
A Facilities Committee has been formed to help make decisions regarding the
best use of the building in the short term. Issues regarding maintenance of the
current building will be addressed to provide a safe, secure and well-maintained
educational environment for the students.
A Strategic Planning Committee will be formed to address the long-term goals of the school. All areas of the school will be examined, including spiritual, academic, technology, development and facilities. Based on the enrollment, plans for renovation of the current facility and/or new construction will be considered.
